While I am on the subject of animation, I have to say a few words about another animator I admired as an art student, and later fell in love with when I saw a retrospective of her work in Prague many years ago.
Lotte Reiniger (1899-1981) was a German animator, who worked with intricate silhouettes and created amazing stop-motion (if it can be called that) films. There is really nothing to say about her work, it speaks for itself. The attention to detail and skill that goes into these animation is tremendous. These were done with paper, scissors/knife and a camera. (Ok, maybe this is simplification, but more or less that was it – no after-effects, flash or whatever one would do today).
